I4/Living on i4
In general: try to be considerate. Keep the floor's things and spaces clean and avoid blocking them for long, so that others may use them, too. Please introduce yourself to us—your floormates—, we would love to get to know you. We'll also try to explain anything about our floor this document did not help you with, you just need to ask.
A quick summary of the most important guidelines we try to apply to our life on i4:
- In the kitchen:
- Avoid scratching our coated pans (use protective fabric when stacking and no metal tools).
- Clean (and if applicable: dry and shelve) surfaces, tools, cook- and tableware you used, before leaving the kitchen (unless still cooking or cooling down).
- Don't store the floor's things (like plates and cutlery) in your room.
- In the lavatory:
- Keep the toilets clean.
- After showering, dry the floor and open the window.
- We use “tags” (clothes-pegs with room numbers) to mark things we temporarily leave in communal areas. In particular in the kitchen and laundry on the drying racks in the corridor.
- Check the kitchen blackboard for your floor duty week.
- Contribute 4 €/month to our floor treasury.
If you're new here, go to HaDiNet for internet access (even if you're subleasing), check out the HaDiKo Wiki for all kinds of information on HaDiKo, and ask your floormates, if you need help with anything. We do have a Telegram group: if you’re ok with that, ask someone to add you. If you have guests, help them to act in accordance this document's guidelines.
Floor Duty
About every 15 weeks, you're on floor duty for a week. You can find those weeks' calendar week numbers (number of the week within the year of its Thursday) next to your room number on the kitchen blackboard. The previous floor duty will notify you, when your floor duty starts. During your floor duty, you are primarily responsible to:
- Take our waste out.
- Whenever full (or nasty/smelly), bring out our kitchen's recyclables, residual and biowaste.
- Just before passing the floor duty to the next person (and whenever full), bring out the kitchen's glass waste, the lavatory's paper and residual waste and the large storage chamber's paper waste.
- There is a map of waste disposal sites in HaDiKo above our kitchen sink. For recyclables, residual and biowaste, leave our house's basement and walk straight into the area enclosed by a green fence. For glass and paper, turn to your left there, and walk forward, until you see the containers at almost the other end of HaDiKo to your right.
- During your week, choose one of the extra duties on our kitchen blackboard (to clean either our microwave and our toaster, or one of our ovens) without a mark. Do and mark it. If all extra duties are marked, erase all marks.
- Before passing the floor duty to the next person, clean the kitchen, including its surfaces and stray items (or find the perpetrators and have them do it).
To pass your floor duty to the next person: move the arrow on the kitchen blackboard to their calendar week, move the floor duty sign to their door and notify them (in person or by text message). The “current calendar week” field on the kitchen blackboard may be updated independently (e.g. if you didn't yet pass your floor duty to the next person on monday, as you still need to take out the paper and glass).
Kitchen
You share a cupboard in the kitchen, a fridge either in the kitchen or in the large storage chamber and a freezer compartment with one to two floormates. Talk to these about their partition. If you're not happy with your storage spaces, talk to us, we can swap things around. Moths are a regular pest in our kitchen's seeds and flours. If you find moth infested produce (yours, or somebody else's), please immediately take it to the outdoor waste sites.
Otherwise, most things in the kitchen are available for all to use, including all our equipment, and foodstuffs (usually onions and garlic) in the glass bowl. If a consumable (kitchen paper, soap, …) is empty, there might be more in the shelf to the right of the sink or in our large storage chamber. If you leave something temporarily in the kitchen (e.g. to soak, slow-cook or cool down), tag it with your room number. But even then, anyone may use, eat or destroy it after 3 hours (preferably after trying to contact you), unless it's actively cooking/baking or you're in the kitchen to interject. Tagging something does not alleviate you of your responsibility to clean, dry and shelve it promptly.
You can also tag something as “free” (and/or put it centrally on our kitchen table), to explicitly share it. If something you shared has been blocking kitchen space for some time, with nobody else partaking, it's your responsibility to remove again. If you take the last “free“ piece, clean up (the plate, etc.) afterwards. If you'd like to donate or lend kitchen equipment to the floor, please ask beforehand, and find a good place to store it. Beware that shared equipment may end up being damaged.
- Be careful with our kitchen equipment.
- Do not use or leave metal tools (or other hard, non-wooden objects) in coated pans and pots.
- When stacking coated pans, put protective fabric between them, to avoid scratches.
- Use a knife's back side to push stuff off the cutting board, don't scrape with the knife's cutting edge.
- Use the Saeco coffee maker only after having been introduced to its operation by Fynn i410. (TODO: include instructions here?)
- Keep the kitchen, its surfaces and equipment available to all.
- Return tableware etc. you took to your room from the kitchen immediately after using it. Consider using plates and bowls from the large storage chamber instead of our kitchen's uniform stackable plates and bowls.
- Return trays to the ovens or the drawers below them after taking them out.
- Avoid blocking the sink and the area around it. Put into the sink only what you're currently cleaning, to the left of the sink only what you're about to clean and to the right only our cutting boards and what you've just cleaned. Dry and shelve immediately after finishing cleaning.
- Clean what you used, before leaving the kitchen: clean surfaces and clean, dry (all sides!) and shelve tools and cookware. For the sink: empty its sieve, and clean the surrounding surfaces.
- Clean the microwave after using it, or (much easier!) cover what you put into the microwave. Clean the covering afterwards.
- If you find rotten foodstuffs or empty bags in the onion/garlic glass bowl, please trash them. At times, also clean out dry onion skins.
- Return scissors, gloves etc. to their drawer/hook after using them, to avoid them getting dirty.
- Don't clean the pizza stone with detergent, just mechanical force and water. Otherwise it will slowly diffuse detergent into your next pizza.
There's a container for collecting dirty dish and hand towels (and other kitchen equipment that should go into the washing machine). Whenever we're out of towels, someone (feel free to be that someone) needs to wash them (at 90°C, to simultaneously clean the washing machine). So don't discard them needlessly, but do switch them out if they've become nasty. After using a dish towel, hang it (ideally without folds/wrinkles) over the bars below the window to dry. As we only have space for two dish towels, avoid more than two being in use at once. Don't put them on kitchen surfaces or sofas.
If you're planing to be in the kitchen with more than two non-floormates, for an extended period of time (½ h), please announce it the day before, with a rough time and group size estimate. If it's spontaneous, still send a message into our group. We usually don't veto, but some might want to schedule around, or at least be prepared before entering a full kitchen. Your floormates may still use the kitchen, even while your group is there.
We also have a monochrome printer in the kitchen. Microsoft Windows may have problems with it, but CUPS (i.e. most other operating systems) should work. If you only have MS Windows, ask a floormate to print for you. There's also a (TV-)screen and a sound system (incl. Bluetooth receiver “Ugreen-70601”). Be considerate with the volume, and turn it down if requested. The kitchen is our living room, feel free to suggest decorations (pictures…). Do turn off the light if the kitchen is empty, use the heater sparingly and open the window as often as you'd like—but don't tilt it, open it completely.
Corridor & Balconies
The fire department requires our corridor to be mostly empty, the caretaker may remove anything except for the drying racks in front of i401/02 and one pair of shoes per door. When using the drying racks (or the clothes line above them), do tag your laundry. Untagged laundry may be removed by anyone (and may be auctioned at the next floor meeting, if unclaimed). Do try to remove your dry clothes in a timely fashion. If you need space blocked by dry clothes, ask the owner to remove them.
We have two balconies. These are the only places smoking is permitted, but close the door while you do. The large balcony is shared with the floor L4, but you can reserve it using the list on its door.
Lavatory
Keep the toilets clean (sit down), and cleanup after yourself (using the toilet brush if necessary and dry the floor after bidet sprayer accidents). Each toilet stall should have at least two rolls of toilet paper: the one currently in use and one reserve. After emptying a roll, throw it into the paper bin next to the sink, and replace it with a new one from on top of the washing machine. Besides that, only disinfectant (and in the middle stall: emergency period products) and optionally fragrance spray should be stored there. Only toilet paper, the sound system (which you may use: Bluetooth “Hazy Audio”) und laundry detergent donated the floor and its members may be stored on top of the washing machine.
- Use the washing machine only between 08:00 and 22:00. If you want to start it, but it won't finish before 22:00, you can program it to start at 08:00 (repeatedly press the timer button). If full, it often takes longer than it originally claims, so plan for an appropriate buffer.
- Set yourself an alarm to empty it soon after it finished. Turn it off (using the dial) and leave the hatch open. Someone else might have already done that for you, to stop the beeping and your cloths from stinking.
- You may move someone else's finished clothes from the washing machine into a basket, to start your own washing machine. If you're not comfortable with others touching your laundry, put a suitable sign on the hatch. (TODO: suggest a tag as that suitable sign.)
- If there's a basket of dirty laundry in front of the washing machine, they're in queue, don't skip them. (TODO: revoke? This just decreases washing machine utilization, and deincentivises punctuality. Also, how to tell clean from dirty laundry? (Sniffing?))
Replacement of the hand towel next to the sink is handled like that of kitchen towels. Do not use the showers for storage; drying wetsuits are tolerated. Do not open the window while someone is showering, but do otherwise open it after showering. Dry the floor after showering. Do turn off the light if nobody's in the lavatory. The heater should usually be off.
Storage Chambers & Drinks
You may use the drinks supply in the large storage chamber, but only after depositing sufficient funds with Alex i402. Create a mark on the list for your room number for each drink you take. Return the empty bottle afterwards, sorting them into the correct crate. If you take a pre-cooled drink from the drinks fridge, replace it. Do not put personal stuff into the drinks fridge.
If you leave stuff in one of the storage chambers, mark it with your first name and room number, and take it with you when moving out. In the small storage chamber, no flammable objects are allowed (most wood is ok, mattresses aren't), and line-of-sight to the HaDiNet equipment needs to be preserved. Except for stuff on top of the fridges/freezer (TODO?), everything else in the large storage chamber belongs to the floor. Supplies in the kitchen or lavatory can be replenished from here. If the respective supply in the storage chamber is low, see the _Floor Treasury_ section. (TODO: what can be used at will (plates?, tea, dirt), what is only for use in shared spaces (kitchen/toilet paper, disinfectant, soap, …)?)
Leave the light switch in the large storage chamber on, else you're disabling the motion sensor. Do turn off the light in the small storage chamber.
Floor Treasury
Our treasurer is currently Timon i413. For each month you have your room, contribute 4 €, before the respective month starts. If you bought something for the floor, bring the receipt to the treasurer to be reimbursed. Some things we'd like to always have in stock, you may buy these for the floor (please do!) without asking beforehand:
- spices (e.g. from B3, salt, sugar, onions and garlic
- baking paper, kitchen paper and plastic trash bags
- cleaning equipment (kitchen sponges and dish detergent, citric acid)
- liquid hand soap (TODO: toilet stall disinfectant)
- period products, if supply in lavatory empty
If you notice we're low on any of these items, but can't restock them yourself right now, send a message into our group. We do not reimburse toilet paper, laundry detergent, potatoes and oil.
The floor treasury also pays our public broadcasting fees. If you got mail from the “Beitragsservice”, telling you to pay public broadcasting fees: don't pay them, instead ask Anna i405 for further instructions.
Administration
Anyone may accept parcels for floormates. If you're expecting a parcel, also check your mail regularly, you might have to pick it up from the HaDiKo post office (between K1 and K5), they will send your parcel back otherwise.
We regularly hold floor meetings, to decide on rules presented in this document, large purchases and the like; usually by vote of the majority of attending floor members. If you'd like to change something, PLEASE do suggest it! The floor meeting also elects our floor speaker, currently Timon i413, to represent us at the K4 house parliament. In floor cleanings, we thoroughly clean the communal parts of our floor (and every second floor cleaning also the large balcony). You are expected to attend both floor meetings and floor cleanings. If you don't attend a floor cleaning, you'll be assigned some leftover task.
Information published both on our kitchen blackboard and in our Telegram group is assumed to reach all floor members within a reasonable amount of time. So check at least one of these regularly.
If you'd like to complain about a party in HaDiKo being to loud, contact the partying people either directly or indirectly (through house speaker or floor speaker), instead of immediately calling the police.
Tips
Some additional notes about HaDiKo, not specific to our floor:
- If your electric key stops working, you might need to “recharge” it at the bike cellar’s door.
- You can find much information about HaDiKo in the HaDiKo Wiki and on the HaDiKo Website and HaDiKo-L email list. We are a self-organized dorm, there are many ways you can contribute to the HaDiKo-wide community!
- The room between the bike cellar and AKM drains into the canalisation, so you may use detergent there, while the ramp outside drains straight into the ground.
